Your Airbnb rating is the plain average of every overall star. One 4-star review at 4.90 costs 0.04 with 20 reviews and 0.01 with 100.

Your listing rating is the plain average of the overall star from every review. There is no weighting and no time decay. Category stars for cleanliness, accuracy, and the rest do not feed the number. One 4-star review on a 4.90 listing costs 0.04 at 20 reviews and 0.01 at 100 reviews. To win back 0.01 you need 10% more 5-star reviews than you have now.

## How does Airbnb calculate the listing rating?

Airbnb states it in one sentence on [Help Center article 13](https://www.airbnb.com/help/article/13). "A listing's rating is the average of the overall rating scores from all reviews of the listing." The formula is the sum of every overall star divided by the number of reviews.

Three things follow from that sentence.

- Every review counts the same. A review from 2019 weighs as much as one from last week. Airbnb publishes no time decay.
- Only the overall star counts. The six category stars are separate and visible only to you and Airbnb.
- The number never resets. A rating built on 300 reviews barely moves; a rating built on 12 swings.

Your host rating is a second average. It takes the overall star from every review across all your listings. Superhost uses that host-level figure against the 4.8 threshold.

## When does the rating appear in search?

After three reviews. Once a home has at least three reviews, the rating appears next to the listing title in search results. It also appears on the listing page. Before that, guests see the review text but no number.

Guests can sort your reviews by most recent or by rating. They also see a bar chart of 1 to 5 stars. A single 2-star review is one click away for anyone who sorts by lowest.

## Do category ratings count toward the overall?

No. Airbnb keeps the category stars "available only to the host and Airbnb". A guest can give you 4 stars for location and 5 overall, and your rating takes the 5.

The categories still matter elsewhere. Airbnb's [Guest Favorites page](https://www.airbnb.com/help/article/3495) lists all six category ratings as inputs for the badge and the Top 10% labels. Airbnb publishes no figure for how much any one category weighs there. The claim that category stars are averaged into your public rating is false.

## How much does one 4-star review cost?

Use the plain average. New rating = (N × A + s) ÷ (N + 1). N is your review count, A your current average, and s the new star.

Example with 50 reviews at 4.90.

```formula
(50 reviews × 4.90 + 1 × 4) ÷ 51
= 249 ÷ 51
= 4.882
Rounds to 4.88. You drop from 4.90 to 4.88.
```

The same 4-star review at four review counts, all starting from 4.90 and rounded to two decimals.

| Reviews before | Rating after one 4-star | Drop |
|---|---|---|
| 20 | 4.86 | 0.04 |
| 50 | 4.88 | 0.02 |
| 100 | 4.89 | 0.01 |
| 200 | 4.90 | 0.00 |

A 1-star review has roughly four times the effect of a 4-star review at this starting average. At 50 reviews and 4.90, one 1-star review gives this.

```formula
(50 reviews × 4.90 + 1 × 1) ÷ 51
= (245 + 1) ÷ 51
= 4.82
One review away from the Superhost floor.
```

## How many 5-star reviews do you need to recover?

Recovery is slower than the drop, because a 5-star review can only add 0.1 above a 4.90 average. To reach target T from average A you need k consecutive 5-star reviews. k = N × (T − A) ÷ (5 − T). Round up.

| Reviews now | 5-star reviews to regain 0.01 (4.89 to 4.90) | 5-star reviews to regain 0.10 (4.80 to 4.90) |
|---|---|---|
| 20 | 2 | 20 |
| 50 | 5 | 50 |
| 100 | 10 | 100 |
| 200 | 20 | 200 |

Check the 100-review row.

```formula
First column:  k = 100 × (4.90 − 4.89) ÷ (5 − 4.90) = 100 × 0.01 ÷ 0.10 = 10
Second column: k = 100 × (4.90 − 4.80) ÷ (5 − 4.90) = 100 × 0.10 ÷ 0.10 = 100
```

To climb 0.1 you need as many perfect reviews as you already have. Every review under 5 stars during the climb pushes the target out again.

Use your actual review count and unrounded average when estimating recovery. Small rounding differences can change the number of perfect reviews needed, so round the final count up.

## What does this mean for a listing near 4.8?

The Superhost threshold is 4.8 over the past 12 months. A listing at 4.82 with 40 reviews fails after one 3-star review.

```formula
(40 reviews × 4.82 + 1 × 3) ÷ 41
= 195.8 ÷ 41
= 4.78
```

The same review at 150 reviews leaves you at 4.81.

```formula
(150 reviews × 4.82 + 1 × 3) ÷ 151
= 726 ÷ 151
= 4.81
```

> **Our view.** In the listings we score, the exposed ones have few reviews and sit a few hundredths above 4.8. For those, one more 3-star review matters more than any reply or report. Read the category stars on your last five reviews and fix the lowest one this week.

Two actions cut the exposure.

1. Grow the review count. Every completed stay that ends in a review dilutes the next bad one.
2. Fix what the low reviews name before the next guest arrives. The category stars tell you which room to look at, even though guests do not see them.

Start with the problems that recur in your own reviews. A repeated complaint about cleaning gives you a clearer next action than a general ranking of which category matters most.

## Which rating should you work on first?

Use the overall rating to track your public result and the category scores to find what needs fixing. A weak cleanliness score calls for a better turnover process, even when it has not yet pulled the overall average down.

New five-star reviews improve the average gradually. They do not erase an older review. Focus on a repeatable guest experience and use the calculations above to set realistic expectations.

## Questions hosts ask

### Does Airbnb round my rating?

Use the figure shown in your assessment dashboard when checking the 4.8 Superhost requirement. A rounded calculation is useful for planning, but it does not replace the dashboard.

### Do reviews without a star rating count?

Every published review carries an overall star. Airbnb publishes no way for a guest to leave text without a star.

### Can I see which guest gave which category score?

Yes. Category stars are private to you and Airbnb, and you see them per review in your reviews list.

### If a review is removed, does my rating change?

Yes. A removed review leaves the average. Airbnb lists the grounds for removal, and disagreement with the star alone does not qualify.

### Does the host rating differ from the listing rating?

Yes. The listing rating averages one listing. The host rating averages every review across all your listings, and Superhost uses the host figure.
