Lead with the feature guests book for, use the first five photos to explain the stay, and show every room clearly.

Use enough photos to show every room and the features that make your property worth choosing. Give the first five the most attention. They are displayed prominently on the listing page. It also sets a floor of 1200 by 800 pixels and crops search thumbnails to a square. Spend your effort on the order of the first five and on one good photo per room, not the total.

## How many photos does an Airbnb listing need?

Build the photo set around the property. A studio needs fewer images than a five-bedroom villa. Include a clear view of each room, the sleeping arrangements and the features guests will compare. Remove near-duplicates that make the tour longer without explaining anything new.

The only rule on Airbnb's own pages is one photo per room or space. Then every room appears in the photo tour.

## What are the technical requirements?

- Resolution of at least 1200 by 800 pixels. Airbnb says bigger files are better, up to about 10 megabytes ([How to take great photos](https://www.airbnb.com/resources/hosting-homes/a/how-to-take-great-photos-for-your-listing-687)).
- Horizontal orientation. Search results crop images to a square, and the listing page shows them horizontal. A vertical photo loses its top and bottom in search.
- A mix of wide, mid-range, and close-up shots, from the same guide.
- No edits that hide flaws. Airbnb's accuracy standard says photos must match the space. AI-edited photos that conceal problems violate policy.

Check the square crop before you pick a cover photo. Open the photo, imagine the center square, and confirm the feature still sits inside it. A wide terrace shot that puts the sea at the far right edge shows a wall in search.

## Which five photos go first?

Airbnb says only that the first five are the most important ([Airbnb Help Center article 477](https://www.airbnb.com/help/article/477)). It does not say which rooms belong there. The order below is ours. Each slot answers the next question a guest asks.

| Slot | What belongs there | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1, cover | The one feature the guest books for, shot to survive a square crop | This is the search thumbnail. It competes with every other card on the page |
| 2 | The main living space, wide, from the doorway | Guests want to know where they will spend the evening |
| 3 | The main bedroom, bed made, curtains open | The bed is the second most checked item after the cover |
| 4 | The kitchen or dining area, or the bathroom if the kitchen is small | Guests confirm they can cook and wash before they read the text |
| 5 | The outdoor space or the view, or the second bedroom if there is no outdoor space | Closes the first impression with the reason to pick this place over the next |

If the property has a pool, a hot tub, or a sea view, that feature is slot 1. Put the exterior of the building in slot 1 only when the building is the feature.

> **Our view.** The cover is the slot hosts get wrong most. In the listings we score, the usual cover is the building front or a wide living room. The feature sits at the edge of the frame and disappears in the square crop. Shoot the feature the guest pays for, centered, and make that photo the cover.

## How do I change the cover photo and the order?

On desktop, select the listing, then go to `Listing editor > Photo tour > All photos`. Select a photo, choose `Make cover photo`, then save. To reorder, open `All photos` and drag the photos into the order you want. Airbnb says changes can take up to 30 minutes to appear. Check the public listing page after that delay, not before.

## What is the photo tour and why does it need one photo per room?

The photo tour groups your photos by room so guests can read the layout. Airbnb's model sorts uploaded photos into rooms on its own. The engineering write-up describes 19 room types and a vision transformer that classifies each image. Two million listings had a photo tour by the 2024 Summer Release.

A room with no photo does not appear in the tour. Airbnb's instruction is direct. "Make sure every room or space has at least one photo so it can appear in your photo tour." Check the tour after upload and move any photo the model filed under the wrong room. You can also add per-room details, such as the bed size, from the same screen.

## What is a visual description and does it matter?

A visual description is the alt text of a photo. It must be fewer than 250 characters and should describe the image objectively. Airbnb uses it for screen readers and as a fallback when an image fails to load. Search engines read it as context. To add one on desktop, open `Listing editor > Photo tour > All photos`. Choose a photo, then select `Add a visual description`.

Write what is in the frame. "King bed with white linen, two bedside lamps, window facing the garden" works. "Cozy dream bedroom" does not describe anything.

## Do professional photos pay off?

Airbnb's own program page reports that listings with professional photos earned 21 percent more and got 19 percent more bookings. The sample was 14,700 professionally photographed listings against 62,300 without, over 2024 and 2025 ([Airbnb Pro Photography](https://www.airbnb.com/e/pro-photography)). Airbnb adds that results vary.

Use the photography figures as context, not a forecast for your listing. First decide whether your current photos show the space clearly and make the strongest feature easy to notice.

Two caveats apply. The sample is self-selected, because hosts who pay for photography also tend to invest elsewhere. And the number says nothing about the order of the photos, which you control for free.

## Questions hosts ask

### Is there a maximum number of photos?

Check the upload limit in your listing editor. Aim for complete coverage rather than filling every available slot; several near-identical images rarely help a guest decide.

### Should the cover photo be the exterior?

Only when the exterior is the reason to book, such as a lakeside cabin or a villa with a pool. For an apartment, the cover is the room or feature the guest pays for.

### Why does my new cover photo not show?

Airbnb says changes take up to 30 minutes to appear. Wait, then reload the public listing page in a private browser window.

### Can I use a photo edited with AI?

Not if the edit hides a flaw or shows something that is not there. Airbnb's accuracy standard names AI-edited photos that conceal problems as a violation. A guest can claim a refund within 72 hours of discovery.
